Unemployment in Texas is at its lowest level in more than three-and-a-half years. Today's report from the workforce commission shows the state added nearly 280,000 jobs over the last year. A lot of that job growth happened right here in Houston.

 

Houston added nearly 96,000 jobs from October of last year, to this past October. Mark Lavergne with the Texas Workforce Commission says the Houston metro area led the state in job creation.

"We're seeing growth in education and health services.  We're also seeing growth in construction, leisure and hospitality, and in government."

In one year, Houston's unemployment rate fell 1.5 points to 6.2 percent. That's slightly under the state average of 6.6 percent. That's the lowest since February of 2009. Lavergne says the decrease is 'not' coming from people giving up and dropping out of the workforce.

"What we're seeing is a growth in the number of people who are looking for work in Texas, and a growth in the number of people finding jobs in Texas, so that's pretty significant."

The state's unemployment rate is more than one point lower than the national average.
