As Economy Improves, Retailers Plan To Boost Seasonal Hiring

Retailers are anticipating a healthy holiday season as consumer confidence ticks up.

Many businesses are holding off on hiring decisions, pending the outcome of next week’s presidential election. But retail chains are proving a big exception.

“We are expecting that holiday hiring will be up this year compared to last year, when just over 660,000 additional retail workers were hired.”

John Challenger is CEO of global outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

“The economy is somewhat better. But there, more importantly, are almost now 3 million more people who are working than there were a year ago, and that’s just more people with the wherewithal, the discretionary income, to spend a bit more this season.”

Target tops the list among seasonal retail employers. The discount chain plans to add 90,000 workers to handle holiday shoppers. Macy’s takes second place with plans to hire 80,000. Kohl’s, Walmart, and Amazon round out the top five.
