The International Rugby Women's Sevens World Series features 12 international women's teams competing next February. Nigel Melville with the International Rugby Board, said it signifies the continuing growth and development of women's rugby around the world.
"We are the fastest growing team sport in America. Women's rugby is an NCAA emerging sport for women, and we have 24,000 women playing the game across America. We have over 300 college programs and 6,000 high school girls playing the game."
In 2016, the finest female players in the world will take their place along their male counterparts when rugby returns to the Olympics in Rio De Janeiro.
USA Women's Rugby Team
Pam Kosanke with USA Rugby says she's been training for a chance to qualify for the team.
"We are the main attraction and that is an unbelievable accomplishment, we have gold medal potential in the 2016 Games. So, we're excited to help launch it in Houston."
The event has partnered with the Houston Area Women's Center. Rebecca White, president and CEO of the center, says she's thrilled that a portion from each ticket sold to the event will be donated to the center.
"Like Title IX gave women opportunities to step in and be all they can be in the sporting arena, that's what the Houston Area Women's Center does for those who are survivors of domestic and sexual violence. We want them to have the opportunities to lead happy, healthy lives. Rugby wants that and so does the Houston Area Women's Center."
