Texas Comptroller Susan Combs released last month's numbers, saying the state brought in nearly $2.4 billion dollars in sales tax last month.
That's a marked increase over the same month last year. August's numbers reflect an ongoing trend for the past year.
For fiscal year 2012, the state's sales tax numbers were about 12.6 percent higher than fiscal year 2011.
Combs reports collections from the oil and gas industry and retail sales were the main areas of growth. Texas will distribute $559 million dollars in monthly sales tax revenues back to local governments this month. That's a gain of 15 percent over the allocations at this time last year.
More than $48 million of that will come back to Houston.
