July brings Houston’s job growth over the past year to more than 83,000.

Lisa Givens is spokeswoman for the Texas Workforce Commission.

“We did see some losses in the government area. We saw gains in the Houston area in the education [and] health services, and the financial activities, as well as trade, transportation, and utilities, which gained 1,000 jobs.”

Texas added 17,800 jobs in July. That brings the total number of new jobs in the state over the past year to 222,500. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports only California saw a larger increase in hiring over the past twelve months.

Houston’s unemployment rate stood at 7.5% in July, unchanged from June. The state unemployment rate grew two tenths of a percentage point in July to 7.2%, while the national employment rate was flat compared to June at 8.3%.
