The university’s Robertson Stadium dates back to 1942. The Houston Oilers played there in the sixties, and it also hosted Houston’s soccer team, the Dynamo.
But now the 32,000 seat stadium will be demolished after this fall’s football season.
It will be replaced by a new stadium in the same location. The new one will have 40,000 seats and will cost $105 million dollars.
David Bassity is Assistant Athletics Director for Communications.
“I mean it’s an exciting time for us with the move to the Big East in 2013. Athletic programs and the university are certainly expanding.”
This first financing package covers about 80 percent of the stadium’s total cost by a mix of bonds, donations and state grants.
The construction will also include a new building for the school’s marching band program.
The University has chosen a construction firm that also built Reliant Stadium and the Dallas Cowboys Stadium.
