Forty-year-old Percy Melton — a science teacher at Elsik High School in the Alief ISD — was headed east on I-10 Tuesday morning when she was stopped between Vinton and Sulpher Louisiana, about 30-miles from the Texas Border.

Kim Myers with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Department, says she was stopped for a traffic violation.

"When the driver of the car began to act suspiciously during that stop, the detective asked for permission to search her car, and she refused. The detective brought his canine out to the car who alerted to the odor of narcotics, and after a search, 53 pounds of marijuana was found in 2 duffel bags in her trunk."

The pot — valued at $120,000 — was wrapped in cellophane and trash bags inside those duffel bags.

"She is still in custody, she has $150,000 dollar bond. Her charges are distribution or possession with intent to distribute of scheduled 1 narcotics, and possession of marijuana."

Alief ISD put Melton on administrative leave from her job, pending the outcome of an investigation.
