Part Of Highway I-10 Shuts Down For Weekend

Houston drivers need to brace for a major freeway shutdown this weekend.

TxDOT is shutting down the eastbound lanes of I-10 headed into downtown so crews can do repairs to the Houston Avenue bridge. It was hit by a truck last month.

"They'll replace the steel, replace the concrete around the bridge. It wasn't falling apart or anything but they wanted to make sure that it remained safe and sturdy."

TxDOT's Danny Perez says the actual shutdown begins at Studemont, but they want eastbound thru traffic to get off the freeway at the 610 Loop.

"We will start shutting off traffic about Silber, then you get to 610 where the lanes start to narrow.  Either get on 610 or use an alternate route. We're trying to keep traffic off, once they past 610, try to keep them off the main lanes of I-10."

The east bound shutdown extends to I-45 and it also includes the Smith Street exit. The westbound lanes won't be affected.  That shutdown begins at 9:00 tonight. The freeway is set to reopen no later than 5:00 a.m. Monday.
