With school out, most parents have found ways to keep their kids busy by now. But when they return to class in August, how can parents fill those hours between the end of the school day and the end of their work day?

For kids with working parents, after-school programs don’t have to be an extension of the school day. Dr. Lisa Caruthers director of Harris County’s Cooperative for After School Enrichment, or CASE, says it should be a fun time for students.

"If you’re teaching math and science, do it through a cooking lesson! There’s a lot of freedom in after school that can bolster what they learn in a school day, but do it in a way that’s fun and entertaining for the kids as well."

Programs from literacy to performing arts can be found on the after school website. Parents can search out programs in the Harris County area near their child’s school and providers can post their various programs.

The website is in its seventh year and Caruthers says they’re looking to grow.

"As the school year approaches, we want to make sure that we build on the 845 programs and providers that are already in the system. We would love to broaden it. We’re also in collaboration with Texas Partnership For Out of School Tme. We’d love to eventually expand the zone to connect with them."
