Another Physican's Group Weighs In On Gov. Perry's "No" To Obamacare Options

Governor Rick Perry says he doesn’t want Texas to expand Medicaid to more adults under President Obama’s healthcare law. The choice is optional for states.

Tom Banning is the CEO of the Texas Academy of Family Physicians. He thinks it’s too early to decide to ‘opt out’.

“I think that there are opportunities to negotiate and leverage changes to the existing and new Medicaid pools to try things differently. Because obviously what works in Texas is not necessarily going to be what works in Washington state.”

Banning points out that the federal government granted Texas a huge waiver last year to make big changes to the existing Medicaid program.  He says there will probably be wiggle room in the new expanded option, too.
