Funds for the program are made available through a federal grant. The award was based on the age of Baytown's homes and infrastructure, along with income levels determined through the U.S. Census. June Tyler is with Baytown's Planning Department.
"It's harder to obtain a loan, especially low-to-moderate income folks who are looking for ways to get a mortgage loan. The down payment and closing costs assistance gives them the extra boost that they need."
Baytown's Homebuyers Assistance Program provides help to residents who fall within HUD income guidelines. Homes have to be within the Baytown city limits, and the purchase price can't exceed $105,000.
"It's giving people a chance to purchase the older homes in Baytown which helps us improve the housing stock. It helps keep that older housing stock in good shape."
Baytown residents who apply for the program have to provide a loan application letter. They also have to attend a new homebuyers education class. Qualifying homebuyers can get up to 45-hundred dollars.
"It's a five-year forgivable loan, so each year that you live in a home for five years, we'll subtract 20 percent from what you owe."
