Wednesday Holiday Likely To Hurt Productivity All Week

With Independence Day falling in the middle of the week, many workers are taking a long weekend or even the entire week off. And while it’s hardly unusual for workers to take a week’s vacation during the summer, the sheer number taking off at the same time will be enough to give some companies a pain in the wallet.
John Challenger is CEO of global outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.
“For a busy company, there’s just the risk that they can’t produce the same amount worker-hours they need to provide a high quality service or product. For companies that are in a slowdown, it’s probably not a bad idea to get their vacations loaded up at the same time.”
Any crimp in productivity tied to the holiday will compound problems caused by triple digit temperatures across the country. Challenger says people just move slower in the heat. Many wind up staying home to deal with heat-related issues, such as power outages and broken air conditioning units.
