Small Business Hiring Flat In June

Small business hiring in Houston was flat in June compared to May. That’s according SurePayroll’s Small Business Scorecard, an economic indicator that tracks the health of the U.S. small business economy. Nationwide, small business hiring dropped by 0.2%.
For the same period, paychecks at Houston small businesses rose nearly 1.5%. Paychecks were nearly flat nationwide.

“There’s a lot of uncertainty right now in the economy in terms of what’s going to happen over the next six to twelve months. Taking on new workers is a big responsibility, and if I can get by and get the little bit of growth that I’m going to get in my business with my existing workforce, that’s a much easier, less risky move.”
A related SurePayroll survey found optimism among small business owners down slightly from May. The majority of respondents expressed concern over turmoil in Europe and slow growth in the U.S..
