AAA Texas predicts three million Texans will travel next week, and 2.5 million of those will drive to their destinations. That's up 5-percent from last 4th of July week. Sarah Schimmer with AAA says next week will mean a full vacation for many Texans.
"Because 4th of July falls midweek, people have the option of taking this weekend up to the 4th or the 4th through the following weekend and what we'refinding is this 4th of July this year it's not the typical four day weekend, that people are actually extending it to a six day vacation, which is very interesting compared to last year."
Gas prices are down 9-cents a gallon here in Houston this week and are more than 20¢ lower than they were last year at this time. Schimmer says many Texans are going to double-dip on vacations this summer.
"People are planning on taking more than one summer vacation. Usually people save it for the 4th of July. It's the big getaway, it's the big vacation. But because consumer confidence is up and gas prices are down, people are planning one, two and three vacations this summer, so again, very good economic news."
Schimmer says the most popular destinations next week for Texans are San Antonio and Galveston.
