Texas Unemployment Rate Bounces To 6.9%

The latest Labor Department figures on state employment are a mixed bag for Texas.

The Labor Department reports the Texas unemployment rate rose to 6.9% in May, up from 6.5% in April. It was one of eighteen states that reported unemployment increases from the previous month.

Fourteen states and the District of Columbia saw unemployment drop from April, while another eighteen states saw no change. The national jobless rate was essentially flat at 8.2%.

Twenty-seven states plus the District of Columbia added jobs in May compared to April. The largest over-the-month increase came in California, which gained nearly 34,000 jobs. Texas added 12,500.
