Exxon Mobil says it will expand the size of its campus under construction in The Woodlands to accommodate more than 2,000 additional employees.

The expansion will boost total occupancy at the new Exxon Mobil campus to 10,000 employees. Some of the jobs will be moving from the company’s refinery complex in Baytown.

Most will be transfers from out of state, as Mayor Annise Parker noted in a press conference.

“This is not consolidation and a retrenchment where they’re cutting jobs. It’s actually they’re relocating jobs, primarily from Fairfax, down to the Greater Houston area.”

Exxon Mobil’s campus in Fairfax, Virginia is a remnant from the days when Mobil Oil was headquartered there, before it merged with Exxon in 1999. The company says employees at its chemical operations in Akron, Ohio will also be moving to The Woodlands.

The 400-acre campus is now under construction near the intersection of I-45 and the Hardy Toll Road. The relocations are scheduled to begin in 2014 and finish in 2015.
