Haute Wheels Food Truck Fest Hits Houston Again

The second Haute Wheels Food Truck Festival kicks off this weekend. Last year over 3,000 people descended on Houston Community College's parking lot. And that was the problem, overcrowding. But this year organizers say they’ve worked out the kinks.

Thrity-four specialty food trucks will be parked just off 610 this weekend at Houston Community College’s West Loop Campus. You can look forward to sampling mouth-watering desserts, hot dogs, gourmet burgers and other food delicacies.

Haute Wheels coordinator Debra Ford says while their first festival was a success, there were some hiccups.

"We had a lot of people who arrived all at one time, and when the food trucks prepared the food made to order, lines got long and so we had an hour and hour-half wait, and then they ran out of food."

To make things go a little more smoothly this year Ford says they’ve made some changes.

"We’ve increased the number of trucks. We have almost twice as many trucks as we did last year. And we are limiting the attendance. So a number of 2,500 tickets will be sold."

Ford has also asked truck vendors to stream line their menus. Justin Turner, owner of Bernie’s Burger Bus, took part in last year’s festival. He’s actually going to be adding to his menu.

"So we are going to do a full menu plus some additional stuff that people have seen for specials. Stuff they haven’t seen before that. So it’s going to be exciting."

With nearly six dessert trucks Nicole Mora of Frosted Betty Cupcakes says they will be returning this year with some unique and eye-catching desserts.

"Definitely going to have a big giant piñata cupcake sitting on top of our van, so I think that we’ll definitely set us apart. We are planning on having a few people there to help us and our lines are going to be moving fast. I think that was an issue last year. It was kind of slow. But I think everybody is going to be on their game this year."

The Haute Wheels Food Truck Festival runs through Sunday.
