"Last call over here ... last call."
It was perfect weather for the first game of the year. Many people took the day off from work to come out as early as mid afternoon, hanging out at some of the area restaurants and sports bars, as well as taking in the activities outside the stadium where the team usually has music, food and games for kids.
Astros fan Justin Zimmerman was sporting the old Astros rainbow jersey of the 80’s. He gave his thoughts on the upcoming season.
"You’re not expecting them to do that well, so if they do well that’s even better. I think you know they’re going through rebuilding. It’s a young team. They’ll be fun to watch. There will be a lot of energy I think, so it’ll be a fun season."
Many people say they’ve been to plenty of Astros games, but never to opening day. Jim Jaskunas and his wife were there, but they’re Rockies fans and flew in from Denver just for the game.
"It’s opening day man; you have to be there."
I found another couple, Carlos and Becky Zepeda. They’re both longtime Astros fans and are hoping to see some more wins this year.
"Hopefully we don’t do as bad as a lot of people are predicting. We may, I would say, we might be able to win 50/60 games — something like that. But I am rooting for them, of course it’s the home team."
Becky shook he head as her husband talked about the team doing better this year. It was obvious she doesn’t agree with him.
"No, I don’t I’m disappointed in the changed they made and I’m disappointed that they don’t spend the money to get the players we could get. That are available. That other teams seem to get."
"I guess I’m optimistic. I’m going to root for the home team always and I think we’ll do a lot better than people are thinking."
You can definitely feel the excitement in the air. It’s a new season the team has a new owner and fans are hoping for a lot more wins this year. But if not, they say ... they still love their Astros.
