Greater Houston Leads Nation in Year over Year Job Gains

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has released the metro area employment and unemployment numbers for January.

Greater Houston led the nation in over-the-year percentage gains in job growth. The region's employment rose 3.7% percent from January 2011. The Austin metro area came in second, while Atlanta took third place.

In terms of actual jobs, Houston added 94,700 new positions from a year earlier. That put the region in second place, behind New York City, but ahead of Dallas-Fort Worth.

Unemployment rates were lower in January than a year earlier in more than 90% of the nation's metro areas. Houston's unemployment rate for January was 7.6%, compared to the national unemployment rate of 8.8%.
