State Comptroller Announces Tax Amnesty for Businesses

In KUHF Business News, Texas Comptroller Susan Combs has announced a tax amnesty for businesses. The state's Fresh Start amnesty period will run from June 12 through August 17.

The amnesty covers taxes and fees originally due before April 1 of this year. R.J. DeSilva is a spokesman for the Texas Comptroller's office.

"The state has this tax amnesty occasionally. The last one was done in Summer of 2007, and it's authorized by the legislature. And it gives the taxpayers the chance to be able to set their records straight, to clear up their tax records, without facing any penalty in interest."

The Fresh Start amnesty applies to sales tax, franchise tax, and other state or local taxes or fees administered by the comptroller's office. The last such amnesty brought in approximately $100 million in unpaid taxes.

Taxpayers can get details on the Fresh Start tax amnesty at www.freshstart.texas.gov, or by calling 1-800-252-1390.
