Private Donors Increase Reward For Elderly Woman's Murder

"It is such a tragic and senseless crime"
That's Crime Stoppers Executive Director Katherine Cabaniss, who says private donors have now increased the reward for information into the murder of 82-year-old Marie Gage.
The murder happened on the evening of January 12 at Gage's home in the Westbury neighborhood. Cabaniss says a man got into the house after Gage's 84-year old husband opened the door when their dog started barking.
"When Mr. Gage went to the door, someone barged through the door and began violently assaulting Mr. Gage. He fell to the floor, and his wife Marie tried to intervene. When she intervened, she too was beaten and fell to the floor."
Gage died of her injuries, her husband was hurt, and Cabaniss says the suspect is only described as a tall, slender male with a dark complexion. But she says the robber got away with Gage's jewelry, including a sapphire ring and a blue topaz ring. Cabaniss says the suspect may have tried to sell those items on the street.
"Well, the most identifiable piece of jewelry was the wedding band. This home invader stole Mrs. Gage's wedding ring. It was a large diamond ring, 3.9 carats, a beautiful ring that had great sentimental value."
Meanwhile Gage's family is left devastated.
"She was a beloved mother, grandmother, family friend, community leader, and she was the beloved wife of Mr, Gage, who suffered through this terrible offense with her."
