Tea Party Groups Hold Their Own Straw Poll At Minute Maid Park

January 13, 2012

by: David Pitman

It may not get the attention of the presidential straw poll in Iowa, but there is a straw poll happening right here in Houston this weekend. The "Saddle Up Straw Poll" is welcoming tea party members to Minute Maid Park today and tomorrow, so they can make their preferences known for the 2012 election.

Organizers say they're holding this straw poll to encourage presidential candidates to look beyond the early primary states.  Texas doesn't vote in the primary season until Super Tuesday on March 6th.

Along with a presidential straw poll, attendees will be able to state their choices for congressional races at the state and federal levels.

A number of speakers are on the schedule — ranging from media critic Andrew Breitbart, to former presidential candidate Herman Cain, to most of the Republican candidates vying to replace retiring U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison.

There are also a number of breakout sessions on the agenda.  They include lessons on how to use Twitter, how to conduct political campaigns, and a lecture on what the 10th amendment really means.

The Tenth Amendment is frequently invoked by politicians and activists who make arguments against the size and scope of the federal government.
