Harris County Precinct One Constable Jack Abercia
A longtime local lawman has been arrested today along with two of his top assistants after indictments were unsealed accusing the trio of bribery.

Harris County Precinct One Constable Jack Abercia was taken into custody today by federal agents along with his Chief Lieutenant Weldon Weiner and Office Chief Michael Butler. The arrests comes after the return of a 13-count federal indictment earlier this week.

The 78-year-old Abercia had announced he would step down at the end of this month for health reasons and denied his retirement had anything to do with an FBI investigation.

The indictment alleges Abercia the others accepted bribes to run unauthorized background checks for various businesses. It also alleges Abercia was paid $5,000 to hire an unqualified deputy constable. He's been constable in Precinct One since 1991.
