PUC Suggests Eliminating Cap On Electricity Price

Right now in Texas, there’s a cap on the wholesale price of electricity.
It can’t cost more than $3,000 per megawatt hour.
But in Austin, at the Public Utility Commission, member Kenneth Anderson suggested he’s open to a radical change.
"I've got no particular problem raising the system wide offer cap, or eliminating the cap or adjusting the cap."
The PUC has been concerned over recent forecasts that the power grid would be struggling to keep up with demand if this coming summer is as hot as the last one.
Letting prices rise, it says, could spur power companies to build more plants.
It’s not a done deal.
Any change would be negotiated with ERCOT, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas.
It runs the marketplace for distributing power in the state.
