The University of Houston is increasing degree offerings in Sugar Land.  As Ed Mayberry reports, Fort Bend County is one of the fastest-growing areas within Greater Houston.

To accomodate population growth and workforce needs of Fort Bend County, the University of Houston is starting at least nine programs at UH Sugar Land over the next three years — doubling the number of UH programs at the campus. Marshall Schott is UH associate vice president for university outreach.

"We've been working with the community for quite a while to develop some academic programs that aline with some of the needs of local employers, both in the public and private sector. We're in the process of rolling out about three to four additional degree programs at Sugar Land over the next three years. We'll do that each year for the next three to four years."

Following approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the UH System at Sugar Land teaching center will be renamed the UH Sugar Land Campus. 

"There's a little bit of confusion about the University of Houston System. And so we don't have a lot of brand clarity down at Sugar Land, and what we're in the process of doing is changing the name of the campus from UH System at Sugar Land to UH Sugar Land Campus. And that certainly reflects the increased committment that the University of Houston is making to provide access to more higher ed opportunities in the region." 

Fort Bend County increased in population by 65 percent over the past decade. The 200-acre UH Sugar Land campus at Highway 59 and University Boulevard hosts 15 UH degree programs and four certifications.
