Over the next two years, Microsoft will provide free technology training, certification, and job placement support for 10,000 veterans and their spouses. The Labor Department will provide voucher packages for the training through their local workforce area here in Houston, as well as in San Diego, Seattle, Northern Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida.
Curt Kolcun is Microsoft’s U.S. Public Sector Vice President and an Air Force veteran.
“These areas were selected based on the communities that have the highest numbers of returning veterans in the ages of 18 to 30, who have some of the highest unemployment rates across the veteran community.”
The announcement follows several other initiatives the Obama administration is rolling out ahead of Veterans Day aimed at helping returning veterans find civilian employment. The jobless rate for veterans age 18 to 30 is more than 12 percent, 3 percentage points higher than the national average.
