A large crowd of students, faculty, donors and alumni gathered at the University of Houston's College of Technology to celebrate a special anniversary.
"Congratulations on your 70th birthday! What an incredible achievement!" remarked UH President Renu Khator to the excited applause.
It began in1941 as a small training school for the Hughes Tool Company employees and training facility for the US Naval Reserve Vocational School.
"The college of technology runs from the very technical engineering technology science all the way to human sciences," said Dean William Fitzgibbon. "It's a very broad intellectual spectrum."
One of the fastest growing colleges, the college of technology offers its more than 3,000 students 18 degree programs in three departments. Partnered with industry, its curriculum intersects every aspect of the Houston economy.
"We have programs that lead to careers in the energy sector, in health care, in information technology, communications technology," he said. "I just outlined the Houston economy right there. Our dynamics are intertwined with the dynamics of Houston."
It's a long way from vocational school...and closer to the future.
"I congratulate you on serving the community here, serving the students and doing it in such a phenomenal way," Khator said. "This is a great time to be a Cougar!"
