The metro Houston area added 66,300 jobs between September 2010 and September 2011. That put it second behind Dallas-Fort Worth, which added more than 72,000 over the same period.
Greater Houston also ranked second in terms of year-over-year percentage increases in employment — up 2.6%, compared to just over 3% in California’s Silicon Valley.
Meanwhile, the Houston area’s unemployment rate registered 8.6% in September, up three-tenths of a percentage point from a year earlier but unchanged from August. The national unemployment rate in September was 8.8% down from 9.2% a year earlier.
The Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics ranked more than 370 metropolitan areas throughout the country.
