Challenges En Route To Hobby Airport

Beginning at 9 o'clock tonight, departing passenger auto traffic at Hobby Airport will be routed through the second level of the parking garage. That's where passengers who are being dropped off step out of their vehicles to enter the terminal.
Marlene McClinton is with the Houston Airport System. She says the majority of the traffic from the upper level, or the departure level ramp, will now be going through the second level of the parking garage. That ramp itself will be closed for much needed repairs.
"We are doing that because we have a problem with leaking on that ramp. Let's remember, it's a 60 year old facility and over the years, leaks have developed. And that ramp serves as the roof for the baggage handling machines underneath, and so it is not something we can have with the increased leaking into those baggage areas."
The work entails ripping up the pavement on that ramp, replacing the waterproof membrane, and replacing the roadway on top. The curb will be smoothed out to make it more adaptable to rolling luggage. McClinton says its obvious the construction will have an impact to passengers, especially during the upcoming holidays.
"We want people to be able to move as easily as possible. There will be extra signage, there will be extra people, there will be folks at the curbside in the garage, to help people with their luggage."
Passengers are encouraged to use the ecopark 1 and 2 lots for a quicker time. She says it's a good idea to check with your air carrier to see how early they'd like you to be at the airport, and then to add another 15 to 30 minutes for good measure.
