Houston Hotel Room Demand Up 11% Over Past Year

The weak economy is doing little to slow down the hospitality sector. The U.S. hotel industry is on course for its strongest year on record. Houston hotels are doing particularly well.

hotel suiteHotel industry tracking firm STR says the demand for Houston hotel rooms for the first nine months of this year topped 12 million. That’s up nearly 11% from a year ago.

 “Houston actually had the highest demand increase of the top twenty-five markets.”

 Amanda Hite is president of STR.

“People are still traveling even though we’re seeing not wonderful conditions on a macro level. Businesses are still traveling. We had record demand during the leisure summer season.”

Nationwide, hotel room demand is now at an all-time high. The industry sold more than 814 million rooms in the first nine months of this year. That’s up 3% from the previous January through September record, set in 2007.
