Houstonians On The New iPhone

Apple's newest iPhone is now on sale. In Japan, some people began camping out as early as Tuesday to be one of the first to buy it. At one local retail store, the campout began after midnight.

Houston’s Patty Sheppard didn’t camp out overnight to buy the new iPhone 4S. In fact the line at the AT&T phone center near 59 and Buffalo Speedway was shorter than she expected.

"I would say five minutes, less than a page of reading. I was kind of disappointed. I thought I’d finish my book, but I didn’t."

Sheppard already has a Blackberry, but wanted to switch to an iPhone. She doesn’t have to worry about her husband Tom getting upset about her spending money, because he was right next to her and also bought an iPhone.

"We’ve had the Blackberries for several years and slowly we’ve been transitioning to Apple products, because they seem to hold up better and have more functions that make our life easier."

So why do they like the iPhone so much?

"The Apple screens are easier for older people with bad eyesight to use. Also, of course keeping iTunes in one place and not having to have them in a separate iPod."

"Definitely the size of the letters are helpful."

AT&T spokesman Tom Stegner says the first iPhone customer showed up at the store early this morning.

ATT "Gosh, we had somebody here in line, first in line, at 1:45 AM this morning. He has had every iPhone since it launched.  So this is just the next one in line and he wanted to make sure that he didn’t miss it, and it he wanted to be here personally to walk in and get it."

Houston’s Jennifer Benson waited until about 9 this morning to buy her phone.

"I waited. I held out until this one finally came out and decided to get it on my way to work."

I asked her what she likes about it.

"Wel,l I haven’t had a chance to really play with it yet. But just from watching some of the commercials and stuff like that, I’m excited to try the voice activated feature. That looks pretty cool. And then it just is all around faster than my old phone, I can already tell."

The iPhone 4S is already a record-breaker for an Apple product, more than one million were sold in the first 24 hours of pre-orders last week.
