Houston Oil Workers Missing In Stormy Waters Off Mexican Coast

September 9, 2011

by: Andrew Schneider

Mexico's state oil company says it's searching for 10 workers from a Houston-based company who evacuated from a platform in the Gulf of Mexico ahead of Tropical Storm Nate.

Petroleos Mexicanos says it has two ships searching in the area where the workers, employed by Geokinetics Inc., called for help Thursday afternoon. The workers had just left a tugboat-towed rig, the Trinity II, and were trying to reach the nearby oil port of Dos Bocas.

Pemex says its ships have been unable to reach the area about 8 miles off shore of the southeastern Mexican state of Tabasco because of high winds and waves.

Tropical Storm Nate is now drifting northwestward over the southern Gulf with maximum sustained winds of nearly 65 miles per hour. Forecasters say it’s expected to become a hurricane over the weekend.
