The museum says it looked at every possible option to stay in Galveston, and be protected from another massive storm surge. But officials say there's no substitute for being on higher ground.
The negotiations for the move to Ellington have been in the works for about a year. The newly-christened international airport, which used to be known as Ellington Field, is undergoing a major expansion.
The Houston Airport System told the Daily News that it is not offering the museum any incentives to make the move. If the city council signs off on the lease, it would be at least three years before a move takes place. In the meantime, the museum will operate as usual at Scholes International Airport.
