Teen Employment In Houston

Houston teens who managed to land jobs this summer are preparing to return to school next week. Teen employment was up this summer compared to summer of last year, but remained very weak by historic standards.

teen lifeguardsAccording to global outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, businesses hired just over a million teenagers from May through July, a gain of more than 13% over the same period in 2010.

But CEO John Challenger says that’s nothing to cheer about. Last summer’s total of less than a million was the worst on record, and this summer’s numbers were the second-worst in nearly sixty years. Challenger says that could have long-term consequences.

“Teen employment’s so important because it gives young people some of the core career and working life skills they need: being on time, being reliable, getting along with the customer.”

Nationwide, teen hiring dropped by more than 50% in July from its June peak. Challenger blames the collapse on employer fears of a double-dip recession, due in part to the prolonged congressional fight over the debt ceiling.
