Ron Harrell, chair of the university’s Petroleum Engineering Advisory Board, cut the ribbon dedicating the new building. He reflected on how long the moment had been in the making.
“There is in America a very small wren that lays an egg about a centimeter across. The incubation period of that egg is about an hour. But when you take the egg of the great albatross, which is about this big, the incubation period is about eighty days. Based upon this time-size relationship, and our incubation period that we’ve had here, I predict this program is going to be HUGE.” (laughter)
ConocoPhillips took the occasion to give a million dollars to the University of Houston and its Energy Research Park. Conoco pledges to donate the same amount in each of the next two years.
