Weekend Road Work Shuts Down Several Lanes on US 59 at 610 West Loop

The Texas Department of Transportation is urging drivers to avoid using the Southwest Freeway near the West Loop this weekend. Crews will shut down several lanes, along with a connector ramp, in the area of 59 and 610 tonight for work that will last until early Monday morning. David Pitman has more.

The closures apply to three main lanes on the northbound side of 59 from Westpark to the 610 West Loop.  On the southbound side, one lane will be taken away from Weslayan to 610.   Danny Perez with TxDOT says repair crews will work until about 5 o'clock Monday morning on the bridges at the 610 interchange.

"And the only way we can actually do the work is to close those particular roadways down for the time."

Perez says this will also affect some drivers on the West Loop.  The connector ramp from the southbound side of the West Loop, to the northbound side of 59 — a route you might take if you're trying to get from the Galleria to Downtown, will be closed.  Perez says drivers can get around that by continuing southbound on the West Loop to the Bissonnet exit.

"And then they can u-turn at Bissonnet, and they can re-enter 610 West Loop going northbound — and they can access 59 Southwest Freeway going northbound."

All main lanes of the West Loop in both directions will remain open through the weekend.  The only significant lane closures are on 59.  Perez says I-10 might be the best alternate in this case.  He also says there will be more closures of this type in the 59/West Loop area in future weekends, but specific plans have not yet been solidified.
