BSNF Cars Jump Track Near Downtown

Several cars of a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train derailed near downtown Houston this morning shortly before 10 a.m., on Union Pacific tracks near Congress at Dowling.

The BSNF cars jumped the tracks three blocks southeast of Minute Maid Park. Houston Fire Chief E.W. Hutzley says polyvinyl chloride, a powdered plastic, was leaking from two overturned rail cars. Steel beams also fell on the tracks. Four other cars that went off the track remain upright. The train was traveling to Memphis. No one was hurt in the derailment.
