City Reveals Volunteer Initiatives Program

The City of Houston has unveiled a new volunteer website to focus efforts on three areas: after school mentoring, veterans training and CPR training. Ed Mayberry reports.
Mayor Annise Parker says she like to see all other current volunteer efforts continue, but this initiative targets what she calls "impact volunteering."

"We just want to use our Cities of Service initiative and the staff here at the city to help guide volunteers. If you want to volunteer, we're your hookup. We have three areas where we're hoping thousands of volunteers come together across the city — after-school programming, veterans outreach and then heart help: learning CPR."

Cities of Service was founded in New York City in 2009 by 17 mayors from around the nation as a multi-year effort to expand impact volunteerism. Houston is a Cities of Service leadership grant recipient. For more information on Houston's volunteer services website, visit Houston Service.org and City of Volunteer Initiatives Program page.
