Cullen Performance Hall at UH was standing room only as Chancellor and President Renu Khator lead a group of university regents, faculty, alumni and business and city leaders in celebrating the latest accomplishment in attaining
Tier One status. The award by Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching is just one of the hurdles UH must clear to achieve Tier One.

The designation could bring additional state dollars. The ranking is also a milestone in the university's campaign to win more respect here and abroad. Larry Kellner chairs the Greater Houston Partnership. He says it was a no-brainier for the business community to back the three year effort.

"Members say 'let's make UH the best.' Public policy says 'UH needs to be Tier One' and so we got behind it and focused on it, because we think great great cities have great universities. We think UH is a great university."

University Chancellor and President Renu Khator says she is proud the university got the designation in spite of budget challenges.

"We will pass through this difficult time. We'll continue on our path of excellence. It is a very, very, very significant milestone for us. Now, we are one of three public universities in the state of Texas. I don't need to name the other two, because it doesn't matter who else is there."

Khator says her goal now is to increase graduation rates as part of becoming even more globally competitive.
