Human resources consultant Rick Dacri has written Uncomplicating Management, and he says effective management is even more important in the post-recession workplace. It's a matter of identifying solid performers.
"Being able to identify what you expect of those people, communicating that role to them, and then being able to evaluate individuals. And there are those people who just rise to the top, who really want to be there, they're really engaged. They work hard to ensure the success of the organization. Those are your stars—you know who they are. Sometimes they're ignored. We take them for granted 'cause they just do their thing. That's where you can be most effective, particularly in these tough economic times."
Dacri says the hiring process requires a bit of pre-planning.
"Managers are hiring folks that can make an immediate contribution to their bottom line. They are running much leaner. and really the key to being able to do that is to understand 'what is it that I really need before I make a hire?' Profiling your ideal candidate—'what kind of person is going to be successful here, what kind of person is not going to be successful here?' And once you find those folks, 'how do I interview them? What are the things I need to know about them before I can make a clear decision about hiring them?'"
Dacri founded a consulting firm in Kennebunkport, Maine, that helps business owners and managers improve the performance and productivity.
