Bush 41 Backs Incumbent

Republican Governor Rick Perry has picked up the endorsement former President George Bush Sr. and the former First Lady, Barbara Bush. The announcement was no surprise since Perry and Bush are Republicans. But the Governor talked about his ad that features a Houston police officer whose husband was murdered in the line of duty. Pat Hernandez has more.

The brief announcement  by the former first couple George and Barbara Bush was made at the Omni Hotel. Also appearing at the event was Sgt. Joslyn Johnson,  the Houston Police Officer whose husband, Officer Rodney Johnson, was murdered in the line of duty by an undocumented alien.

She's featured in a campaign ad supporting Governor Perry. Asked if she thought former Mayor Bill White, who's hoping to defeat Perry next Tuesday, was somehow responsible for her husband's death.

The ad featuring Sgt. Joslyn Johnson

"That wasn't the intention."

Reporter: "What was your intent then? What are you trying to say in that ad?"

Johnson: "That he had his opportunity to do what he should have done regarding that policy and he did not do it while he was mayor."

Reporter: "How is Mayor White connected to your husband's death?"

Johnson: "He was the mayor at the time my husband died."

Reporter: "And that's all there is to it?"

Johnson: "Pretty much."

Governor Perry commented on the appearance of Sgt Johnson and how Bill White's campaign insinuated that he coerced her to cut the ad.

"I say that is Joslyn Johnson's words and if he finds fault with her own words, then he needs to have that conversation with her. I see the Houston Police Officers Union's endorsement is a really powerful message. She sits on the board of HPOU and her words, I think are pretty compelling and frankly, it's straight out of her mouth what she's saying."

Perry has received the endorsement of several local law enforcement agencies including the Houston Police Officers Union, the Retired Police Officers Association and the Harris County Deputies Organization. White called the ad featuring Sgt Johnson shameless exploitation.
