Houston Shines in Census Count

The Census Bureau says 70-percent of Houstonians turned in their mail in participation for the upcoming census count.
The numbers represent an increase of 6-percent from the last count ten years ago. Margaret Wallace is with Houston Counts.

"We are thrilled at how Houstonians responded to this year's census. We expected that we were gonna do better than the 2000 census, but we had really no idea that we were gonna get into the 70-percent range. That's unheard of for a large city to increase their participation rate as much as we did, 2000 over 2010."

More than 132 thousand Houstonians were counted in the early stages of the census process. Each person counted represents access to 15-hundred dollars in federal funding or an additional 2-billion dollars coming to Houston over the next 10-years. The final population numbers are expected in early 2011.
