HISD Seeks Input On Magnet Schools

HISD is looking for input from parents on how to improve its popular magnet programs. Gail Delaughter reports.
The demand for magnet education is huge, according to HISD Associate Superintendant Lupita Hinojosa, who points to the recent application process at Lamar High School. Hinojosa says about 17-hundred student applied for Lamar's magnet program, while only 700 students were accepted.

She says they're now seeking recommendations from parents on admissions criteria, and they also want ideas on how successful magnet programs can be reproduced around the district.

"How do we measure? How do you recommend to us, the district, that we measure if the program is effective and efficient?"

Hinojosa says about 40-thousand students from kindergarten through high school are enrolled in magnet programs. The first public meeting is Monday night at Furr High School. You can get a full schedule of meetings on the district's website at www.houstonisd.org/magnetforums.
