Triple A Texas says nearly two-and-a-half million Texans will travel at least 50 miles from home over the Labor Day weekend. The association's Sarah Schimmer says that's about a 10 percent increase in traffic over last year.
"A lot of that has to do with the economic picture nationwide just looking a little bit better. People are becoming more comfortable, they're actually spending some of their discretionary dollars on travel."
And Texans will spend more on their holiday trips — up to $850, compared to the national average of around $700.
"Texas consistently throughout the recession has had a really good economy. Texans tend to travel longer distances. We're seeing the average expectation to travel about 630 miles away from home."
Schimmer says 90 percent of Texans who head out of town for Labor Day will get to their destinations by car.
