HISD Board to Hold Special Election

The Houston Independent School District will hold a special election to fill a vacancy on the board. The decision comes with a filing deadline that's less than two weeks away. Laurie Johnson reports.

The HISD Board of Trustees is looking for a replacement to fill the seat vacated by Diana Davila. Davila served as trustee for District VIII on the east side of the town, but resigned citing family reasons. HISD Spokesman Norm Uhl says state law requires the district to either appoint someone to fill the vacancy or hold a special election.

"I think they looked at all of the options open to them and decided that it would be best if the citizens of District VIII chose their own representative. Now that's for an unexpired term. There will actually be another election for a full term coming up in November of 2011."

The special election to fill the unexpired term will take place during the general election on November 2nd. Uhl says holding it in conjunction with the regular election saves money for the district. But it also means the filing deadline is right around the corner.

"For folks who are interested in filing, they need to come down to the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center, which is our headquarters, at 4400 W 18th and go to the Board Services Office to file. They can do that from 8 to 5, Monday through Friday. The deadline is Monday, August 30, at 5pm."

Uhl says eight people have already expressed interest in the position at a community forum held earlier this week.
Candidates must live within the boundaries of HISD District VIII.
