A man accused of breaking into a north-side pet store and stealing three expensive puppies turns himself in. Now authorities need your help in locating the puppies and the vehicle used in the crime. Pat Hernandez has more.
On Monday morning August 2nd, a suspect was caught on surveillance video breaking into Pet City on Bammel Westfield Road and stealing 3 English Bulldog puppies. Cheri Stack with Pet City:
"It took 55-minutes and four attempts to break in, grabbing the bulldogs and throwing them outside...it's horrible."
Her father-in-law Frank Stack says English Bulldogs are a unique breed and sell for as much as $3 thousand dollars.
"English bulldogs are artificially inseminated and all born by c-section. And while they're some of the most expensive animals money can buy, they need veterinary or medical attention almost immediately."
Otis Lee Witchet, the man suspected of the theft, is in custody charged with burglary of a building. Belinda Smith with the Harris County DA's office, says she needs help in building her case, like locating the vehicle used in the crime, and the puppies taken from the store.
"The theft charges are included in the burglary charge, so that is one charge. So there will not be additional theft charges, unless there are other suspects out there who are involved."
She says anyone in possession of the puppies will not be charged, but are being urged to return the animals. Smith says Wichet is no stranger to the law.
"Because he has a prior criminal record, then he is looking at a higher penalty range, and if he were convicted, it would be two years to ten years."
Anyone familiar with the case is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 713.222.TIPS.
