Houston restaurant week is underway, benefitting the Houston food bank. Ed Mayberry reports.
Participating restaurants are offering a special three-course gourmet dinner for $35, with $5 of each special dinners directly benefitting the Houston Food Bank. The annual three-week event was started in 2003 by food critic Cleverley Stone.

"Go to HoustonRestaurantWeek.com. If the restaurant is a subscriber to OpenTable, which is an online reservation service, if the diner makes the reservation off the OpenTable link, OpenTable will make an additional donation to the Houston Food Bank. Now, for each $35 dinner that is ordered during the three-week event, the restaurants will donate $5 to the Houston Food Bank after the event is over."

Select restaurants are also offering a $20 two-course lunch menu, donating $3 of each lunch sold. Houston Restaurant Week is also helping to introduce restaurants to new diners.

"The restaurants are really the ones who are donating the money. The diners pay their $35 but the restaurants take $5 out of that and donate it to the food bank, so the restaurants really only have $30 to work with to create a three-course meal--a nice three-course meal. This year, we have over 120 restaurants, which is just amazingly wonderful, to me."

The event has to-date raised more than $356,000 since 2003 to support the Houston Food Bank.
