Today, we introduce you to an artist who is generating great excitement in Europe but who generally has not yet been discovered by American audiences. French counter-tenor, Philippe Jaroussky was just named Opera Singer of the Year in France for the second time and we spend the hour discussing his musical development and the repertoire that he specializes in...
KUHF's Chris Johnson talks with Philippe Jaroussky as he discusses his musical evolution from pianist to violinist to singer, his particular style of non-falsetto coloratura vocalizing and his insistence on doing his own research into the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century music in which he specializes. He shares what he's learned about the tradition of the castrato singer during the Baroque and Rococo Eras and we hear excerpts from a number of Monsieur Jaroussky's recordings, including his current project to revive the operas of Johann Christian Bach.
