Former New York City Ballet principal dancer Merrill Ashley is re-staging for Houston Ballet, the piece, Ballo della Regina -- The Queen's Ball, which George Balanchine originally created specifically for her in 1978. That work is the keystone of Houston Ballet's 2010 Spring Mixed Repertory Program, which also includes Mark Morris's witty and light-hearted Sandpaper Ballet, and the poignantly romantic retelling of the tale of legendary Texas cowboy, Pecos Bill, as set by the company's Artistic Director, Stanton Welch. There are performances through next weekend in the Brown Theater of downtown Houston's Wortham Center. KUHF's St. John Flynn chats with Ashley about the work about her history with the piece.
