Employment Numbers Mixed in April

The Texas Work Force Commission says the Texas unemployment rose slightly to 8.3 percent in April, but as Rod Rice reports, the number of jobs grew for the fourth consecutive month.

"Right now we're looking at job growth in April of 32,500 jobs."

The Work Force Commission's Ann Hatchitt says the job growth is in a variety of fields.

"They are spread across eight of the eleven industries."

She says the number of new jobs in April brings the year-so-far total 79-thousand jobs.

The jobless rate did creep up from 8.2 percent in March to 8.3 in April statewide. The unemployment numbers in the Houston area dropped by a similar margin from 8.5 in March to 8.4 in April. This area also had an increase in jobs in April of 27-hundred jobs, or about a 1% increase for the month.

"A significant amount of that growth was in education and health services and of course leisure and hospitality we saw growth in Houston last month."

The jobless rate for Texas remains below the national average of 9.9%.
